Year 5 (The Seekers- J.K Rowling)

          Miss G Hothersall

Welcome to the Seekers class page! My name is Miss G Hothersall and I am very
excited to have year 5 for this academic year at Bungay Primary school.
In class, our main support this year will Mrs L Reed. Mrs S Palumbo, Miss V Bennison
and Mrs K Harris will also be working with us at various times during the week.
On Wednesday afternoons, Mrs L Reed and I will be taking the class for PE, so please
make sure that your child has the correct PE kit in school.

Children have been given a home learning book; this is where we will log weekly
homework. Homework will be issued on a Friday and due back the next Wednesday.
Spellings are given weekly and will be assessed as part of dictation sessions and times
tables will also need to be practised, as the children are tested on these daily in school.
If we set a project for homework, the deadlines will vary depending on the complexity
of the project. For this, please check home learning books weekly.

In addition, each member of the class has been given a reading record. This is to log
what the children are reading and how often they are either being read to or are
independently reading. Along with their reading book, their reading logs need to be
seen by an adult at school daily in order for us to monitor progress of home reading.
We expect parents/carers to listen to their children read at least three times a week.
To evidence this, parents/carers will need to write in children’s reading records, noting
how many pages they have read, at what date they have read and to whom.

As children move up to the upper KS2 years, they are becoming role models for the
rest of the school. Therefore, children must understand that expectations for their
conduct, presentation and work ethic are very high!

In the Autumn term, our topics have been ‘Earth and Space’ and ‘Properties and their
Materials’. In the Spring Term, our topics were ‘Mountains’ and ‘Deserts and Oceans’.

This half term, our topic is ‘Vikings!’ We will be learning about how and why they
invaded and settled in Britain, as well as how they travelled here. We will also have
some opportunities to make our own Viking equipment, such as helmets and shields.

If you ever have any queries/questions, do not hesitate to contact us!
