Schools in ASSET Education wish to ensure that pupils with medical conditions receive appropriate support and care at school. We recognise that this can include both physical and mental health.
Medical needs may be broadly summarised as being of two types:
Short-term (eg; affecting their participation in school activities while they are on a course of medication).
Long-term (eg; potentially limiting their access to education and requiring extra care and support).
We strongly advise all Parents/Carers to read our 'Managing Medical Conditions' in School policy which can be found on our policies page here.
Please note that it is expected that Parents/Carers will be encouraged to cooperate in training children to self-administer medication if this is practicable and that members of staff will only be asked to be involved if there is no alternative.
Any Parent/Carer can request that their child is given prescription medicine only in school. If medicines are to be administered in school the Parents/Carers must complete and sign an agreement form which should be completed at the school office.
It is preferable that pupils take medicine at home, before or after the school day and Parents/Carers are expected to ask their child's GP for medical prescriptions that fit around the school day. Eg; antibiotics that are required 3 x a day should be given before a child attends school, when they arrive home and before bedtime.
No pupil will be given medicine without prior Parental consent unless there is a clear and dire emergency and/or ambulance/emergency personnel are in attendance. Prescribed medicines must be in date, prescribed by a NHS doctor and provided in the original container with dosage instructions. The prescribed dosage of medicine must be available at all times.
Parents must regularly renew the school supply of medicines and be responsible for visiting the GP to collect repeat prescriptions.
Medicines will be safely stored in the school office or classroom or in the refrigerator in the office if medicines need to be kept cool.
Any medications not presented properly as detailed above will not be accepted. Pupils should not bring in their own medicine - it should be brought into school by the Parent/Carer and handed directly to the school office and will be passed on appropriately.
